EURid at IGF 2014
Brussels, 2 September 2014 - The 2014 Internet Governance Forum starts today in Istanbul, Turkey. This year's theme is, "Connecting Continents for Enhanced Multistakeholder Internet Governance”.
The 9th IGF will better link with other Internet Governance (IG) processes such as the NETmundial outcomes, the ongoing discussions of the WSIS review, CSTD, ITU and the Working Group on Enhanced Cooperation, among many others. Preparations for the 9th IGF will also follow the recommendations of the CSTD Working Group on Improvements to the IGF. The Forum will actively respond to the outcome document of the NETmundial in a variety of ways, by both taking forward the suggested issues for further discussion and by improving its outcomes.
EURid will be involved in two workshops during the IGF 2014:
- IGF workshop No 80, “ccTLDs: Partners in developing local IG-literacy” that will take place on Wednesday, 3 September 2014, at 9:30 am, Istanbul local time. The workshop aims to show best practice cases of ccTLDs that have facilitated the development of “IG-literacy” through initiatives that have contributed to feed the IG process with local input on the IG ecosystem and the need that it remains anchored to the principles of multi-stakeholderism, openness, transparency and accountability. Giovanni Seppia will moderate the workshop.
- IGF workshop No 11, “Languages on the move: Deploying multilingualism on the net” that will take place on Wednesday, 3 September 2014, at 14:30, Istanbul local time. The workshop aims to continue the study and investigation of how the Internet can become more multilingual through the full deployment of Internationalised Domain Names (IDNs). The EURid-UNESCO 2014 World Report on IDNs in cooperation with Verisign and the regional ccTLD organisations will be presented during the worksop. It includes new chapters about the human perception of the language in its different scripts and the introduction of the first IDN generic top-level domains. It also features an extended section on the universal acceptance of IDNs from the technical perspective.
