What domain name should I register for my business in 2026?

Blog8 okt 20263 minuter läsning

Your domain name is one of the first things customers see, and one of the harder things to change later. It appears on your website, in your emails, on your business cards and on your social media profiles. So how do you choose one that works for years?

The business names in this article are fictional examples.

Start with your business name

If you already have a business name, the simplest option is usually to use it as your domain name:

  • Nordic Bean → nordicbean.eu
  • Green Wheels → greenwheels.eu
  • Luna Home → lunahome.eu

Keeping the domain close to your business name makes it easier for customers to connect the two. If your exact name is not available, a short variation that still clearly represents your brand can work just as well.

Should my domain name be short or descriptive?

There is no single right answer. A short name is easy to remember and type. A descriptive name tells people what you do. For a bakery called Mila, the options might be:

  • mila.eu: short and brand-focused
  • milabakery.eu: explains the business
  • milabakerystockholm.eu: specific, but longer and tied to one location

Choose a name that is easy to say, spell and remember. Avoid unnecessary numbers, hyphens and complicated spellings.

Does the type of business make a difference?

The principle stays the same, but the emphasis shifts.

  • Webshop: Customers need to recognise your name when they return. If Nordic Nest is your brand, nordicnest.eu is the clearest choice, if available. You do not need to add "shop" or "store" simply because you sell online.

  • Hotel or restaurant: The name of the place is usually the strongest starting point, for example lakeviewhotel.eu or casaverde.eu. Adding a city can help a local business, but it may become limiting if you expand.

  • Transport or mobility: If you may add services over time, a broader name such as blueroute.eu gives more flexibility than blueroutetransport.eu.

Choose a domain that fits where your business is going, not only what it does today.

Should I choose .eu, .com or a national domain?

It depends on your customers and your plans. A .com can suit a business with a global focus. A national domain can make sense when you are closely tied to one country. A .eu domain is relevant if you operate in Europe or want to express a European identity.

It is worth being clear about what .eu does and does not do. It will not improve your search ranking on its own, and it complements national domains and .com rather than replacing them. Many businesses use one main domain and register others to protect their brand or serve different markets.

.eu is available to people and organisations with a genuine connection to the EU or EEA, meaning the 27 EU Member States, Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway. EURid manages .eu on behalf of the European Commission, holds ISO 27001 certification and supports DNSSEC. If your brand uses Greek, Cyrillic or accented characters, your registrar can tell you which options are available.

Do you want your domain name to reflect your language or script?

Your online identity does not have to be limited to Latin characters. EURid also offers .eu domain names in Greek and Cyrillic scripts, allowing businesses and organisations to create web addresses that better reflect the language and writing system they use.

Alongside .eu, EURid manages .ευ in Greek and .ею in Cyrillic. These are internationalised domain names (IDNs), designed to support European languages and scripts online.

For example, a business using Greek can register a domain name using Greek characters with the .ευ extension, while a business using a Cyrillic script can use .ею. This can make a domain name feel more natural and recognisable to customers who use these scripts in their everyday digital lives.

You can also consider how your domain name works across different audiences. A business serving customers in several European markets may choose to use a Latin-script .eu domain name as its main address while also registering a Greek or Cyrillic version where appropriate. If your business uses accented or non-Latin characters, check with your registrar which characters and domain name options are available.

What makes a good domain name?

Before registering, ask yourself five questions:

  1. Is it easy to remember? Someone should be able to hear it once and have a reasonable chance of finding it again.
  2. Is it easy to spell? Avoid hyphens, numbers and unusual spellings unless they are essential to your brand.
  3. Does it match my brand? It should make sense alongside your business name and visual identity.
  4. Will it still work if my business grows? Avoid names so specific that they limit future products, services or markets.
  5. Is it available, and is it clear to use? Check availability with a registrar. If your first choice is taken, a short variation is usually better than a long or complicated name. It is also sensible to check that the name is not too close to an existing brand or registered trademark.

So, what is the best domain name for my business?

There is no universal best. The right choice is relevant to your business, easy for customers to use and suitable for your plans. A good starting point is your brand name plus an extension that fits your market.

Your domain name does not have to explain everything you do. Its first job is to give your brand a clear, memorable and trustworthy address online.
