Q2 2026: celebrating 20 years of .eu connecting Europe online

The second quarter of 2026 marked a major milestone for the .eu domain name as EURid celebrated the 20th anniversary of its landrush launch. From reaching one million registrations on 7 April 2006 to surpassing 3.8 million registrations today, .eu has evolved into a trusted online identity for individuals, businesses and organisations across Europe and beyond.

The anniversary celebrations highlighted two decades of .eu’s role in supporting Europe’s digital journey, shared values and cultural diversity. In May, EURid hosted EuroDIG 2026 at the Charlemagne Building in Brussels, bringing together stakeholders from across the internet community to discuss the future of the digital space. The celebrations continued with the** .eu 20th anniversary reception at Train World**, where guests came together to reflect on the journey of .eu and the people and organisations that have helped shape its success.

Throughout the quarter, EURid continued to support initiatives that promote inclusion, sustainability and Europe’s digital ambitions.

EURid announced the ten winning artworks of the SAFEonLINE art competition, which attracted 103 submissions from young artists across Europe. The winning entries will be exhibited in Prague and two additional European cities, showcasing young people’s perspectives on online safety and responsible digital participation.

On Earth Day, under the global theme “Our Power, Our Planet”, EURid highlighted its ongoing commitment to environmental sustainability. Through its EMAS registration, EURid continues to demonstrate that sustainability can be achieved in the digital sector by measuring, reducing and continuously improving its environmental footprint.

The quarter also marked the 10th anniversary of .ею, the Cyrillic script extension for .eu. Since its launch, .ею has supported linguistic diversity, digital inclusion and multilingualism, allowing more communities across Europe to express their identity online in their own script.
