For 20 years, the .eu Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) system has helped solve disputes over .eu domain names quickly and fairly. These disputes occur when two parties claim rights to the same domain name, such as a business seeking its brand name while someone else has already registered it. The ADR process provides a neutral, structured way to resolve conflicts efficiently, without the need for lengthy court proceedings.
Since its launch in 2006, the procedure has handled almost two thousand cases, enabling businesses, organizations, and individuals across Europe to protect their names and rights online. By resolving disputes promptly and fairly, the .eu ADR system helps keep the .eu domain space secure and trustworthy for everyone.
One of the reasons .eu ADR has remained so widely used is its speed. While court proceedings can take years, most .eu ADR cases are resolved in about two months, with decisions made by independent panellists specializing in intellectual property and domain name disputes.
The process is open to parties across the European Economic Area and can be conducted in all 24 official EU languages. Proceedings are administered by two experienced providers: the Czech Arbitration Court and the WIPO Arbitration and Mediation Center. Together, they ensure that disputes over .eu domain names are resolved efficiently and with the necessary expertise.
“Over the past two decades, we’ve seen how important a clear and accessible dispute resolution process is for rights holders,” said Marta Jusztin, Legal Administrator at EURid, who manages .eu ADR cases. “To mark the 20th anniversary of .eu ADR, we’ve put together a new Guide to .eu ADR that gives readers a clear overview of how the system works, its value for rights holders, and how to start a case and understand how decisions are made.”
Twenty years on, .eu ADR remains a cornerstone in ensuring that the .eu domain is not just online real estate, but a safe, reliable, and trusted digital space for all of Europe. By cutting through conflicts with speed and fairness, .eu ADR gives businesses, organizations, and everyday users the freedom to claim their space online, innovate without fear, and build connections that matter, keeping Europe’s corner of the internet safe, vibrant, and dependable.
