Celebrating Universal acceptance day - 28 March!
We are pleased to announce that on 28 March 2023, the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) will be celebrating the first Universal Acceptance Day.
In practical terms, this means that every Internet user should be able to use any email address or domain name, regardless of the top-level domain (TLD) or the language used in the identifier, and that it should work seamlessly with all Internet applications and services.
To promote UA and multilingualism on the Internet, ICANN and EURid signed a memorandum of understanding in 2022. This collaboration will involve joint activities focused on technical cooperation and research, community outreach and engagement, educational resources, and information sharing.
EURid has supported the UA initiative since its launch; it is therefore we do not only offer .eu in Latin, but also manage .ею (in Cyrillic) and .ευ (in Greek) domain extensions. We also allow IDN domain name registrations, enabling everyone within EU to represent their identity and culture in their preferred language and script.
Additional efforts in raising awareness around the topic is the production of the IDN World Report in partnership with UNESCO, CENTR, and APTLD, where currently the latest news provides information on the importance of Internationalized Domain Names (IDNs) to developing economies.
We invite everyone to join us in celebrating Universal Acceptance Day and promoting the importance of UA in creating a more inclusive and connected Internet for all.
