Celebrating five years of the .ею extension

1 Iunie 2021

Sofia, 1 June 2021 - Today, the .ею - European online identity in Cyrillic is celebrating its fifth year. The anniversary event in Sofia brought together representatives from EURid, the Ministry of Transport, Information Technology and Communications, and the Bulgarian registrar community.

According to the latest data, there are 1,369 active .ею domain names that have been registered over the past five years, representing close to 5% of the internationalised domain names in EURid`s portfolio. 51% of the websites associated with the Cyrillic script .ею, are in Bulgarian.

‘As part of our mission to support online multilingualism, EURid is actively working to increase the use of internationalised domain names (IDNs). The universal acceptance (UA) of these domain names implies their smooth use within Internet browsers, e-mail, and Internet applications. At EURid we will continue to collaborate with our Bulgarian and international partners in this regard. We were therefore very pleased to welcome Bulgarian registrar SuperHosting.BG to our Registrar Advisory Board earlier this year’, commented Giovanni Seppia, External Relations Manager at EURid and registry manager of the .eu, .ею, and .ευ extensions.

‘It is a pleasure and a great responsibility for me to join EURid’s Registrar Advisory Board in 2021. I believe that we can contribute to the development of multilingualism and flexibility on the web and meet the needs of European citizens. The Balkan region has great potential for growth in this area, and it is crucial to lay a solid foundation that we can build upon. I believe we all are striving for this’, shared Metodi Drenovski, CEO and Founder of SuperHosting.BG.

Due to the growing importance of internationalised domain name extensions, EURid`s .eu Web Awards introduced a new category in 2021 – ‘Best of .ею and .ευ’ - to distinguish the most remarkable websites, which have been chosen for embracing their local language and for their use of .ею or .ευ for their online presence.
