Celebrating 10 Years of .ею

On 1 June 2026, EURid celebrates the 10th anniversary of .ею, the Cyrillic script extension for .eu, marking a decade of promoting linguistic diversity and digital inclusion across Europe. Since its launch, .ею has provided Cyrillic-speaking individuals, businesses, and organisations with the opportunity to create an online identity that reflects their language, culture, and community.

Today, the broader .eu namespace includes nearly 32,000 Internationalised Domain Names (IDNs), allowing domain names to be registered in local scripts and alphabets rather than only Latin characters. Almost 4% of these registrations are .ею domains, representing close to 1,200 Cyrillic registrations.

While modest in size, the .ею namespace continues to show resilience and relevance. Registrants now come from 28 different countries, demonstrating that interest in Cyrillic digital identities extends well beyond Bulgaria, which accounts for 40% of all .ею registrations. Germany, Estonia, Spain, and Belgium also rank among the top countries using the extension.

“Ten years of .ею represents far more than a technical milestone,” said Stefany Slavova, Bulgarian Liaison Manager at EURid. “It reflects the importance of ensuring that all European citizens can fully express their identity online in their own language and script. The continued use of .ею shows that multilingualism remains essential for an inclusive internet.”

Globally, the demand for multilingual web spaces continues to grow, with more than 60 internationalised country-code top-level domains (ccTLDs) and 90 dedicated IDN generic top-level domains now available worldwide. As EURid celebrates this milestone, .ею remains an important example of how local language representation can strengthen both accessibility and cultural identity online.
