Celebrating 17 years of .eu: A trusted online home for millions of Europeans

It's time to celebrate as the .eu domain turns 17! Since its public registration launch on 7 April 2006, .eu has become the trusted online home for millions of Europeans, with 3.7 million domain names registered, the .eu is the 8th largest country-code TLD in the world. To mark this special occasion, we're delighted to share an important update.

Two years ago, on our 15th birthday, we launched a unique initiative to give back to the environment that sustains us. We asked our beloved stakeholders to share their memories with .eu, promising to plant a tree for each online post we received.

We were delighted by the love and support we received, with 200 heart-warming posts flooding in from all corners. This engagement got us inspired and EURid quintupled the number of trees to be planted.

By now, these 1000 trees like Graviola, Cocoa, Tamarillo, and Coffee, have been planted in Colombia, Kenya, Guatemala, Haiti, and Madagascar and will go a long way in combating climate change. Over the course of their lives, they are expected to absorb about 234.75 t* of CO₂.

As we celebrate our 17th birthday, we want to thank our community for making this initiative such a grand success. It is your love and support that keeps us going, and we're committed to doing our bit for the planet.
