Guidelines for .eu in Greek
This page contains the official guidelines for .ευ (.eu in Greek) which was launched on 14 November 2019 at 9 AM (CET). The information on this page is only available in English.
Registrar accreditation
Accredited registrars or registrars currently undergoing accreditation for the .eu extension are accredited for the .ευ extension by default. No additional pre-payment is required.
Policies and procedures
All policies, procedures and features currently available for .eu (such as transfers, bulk transfers, multiyear, DNSSEC, registry lock, etc.) also apply to .ευ. The current WHOIS Policy, and Terms & Conditions apply to domain names registered under .ευ. The Alternative Dispute Resolution is also available for .ευ.
Domain name script
The script of the second level domain name must match the script of the TLD extension (.eu, .ею, .ευ). For example, registering the domain ‘abc’ will result in abc.eu (with the Latin TLD extension). If the domain name being registered is in Greek script, the script at the top-level will be .ευ. A registrar wishing to register an exclusively numeric domain name – possibly including hyphens – should specify the TLD extension. In the event that an extension is not specified, the .eu (Latin string) extension will be allocated by default.
Homoglyph bundling
All existing and newly registered domain names in the Latin, Cyrillic and Greek script follow the IDNA 2008 protocol and the EURid homoglyph bundling rules, taking the full domain name including the extension into account. As domain names under the Greek extension might be confusingly similar with domain names under the .eu in Latin, they will be subject to the homoglyph bundle rules.
DAS and WHOIS
When undertaking a DAS request, the whole domain name is taken into account, including the extension. When no extension is provided by the user, it will be added by the system according to the rule outlined above; the script of the domain name defines the extension and purely numerical domain names receive a .eu extension by default. The DAS output has only three different possible values: NOT ALLOWED, NOT AVAILABLE and AVAILABLE. A domain name that violates the 'no script mixing rule' (for example, the domain name abc.ευ) always returns a NOT ALLOWED value, as this name cannot be registered under any circumstances.
For a WHOIS request, the same rule is applied in order to add an extension, if it is missing. The textual WHOIS (port 43) will retain its minimal output and refer to the web-based WHOIS for more detailed information.
The web-based WHOIS also allows users to provide a specific extension for a domain name, or to let the system define the extension (once again using the same rules described above). The web-based WHOIS will also show the domain names that are in the same homoglyph bundle. You can find more information about these domain names by simply clicking on them.
Domain name script and legacy from the current domain names database
Since the launch of the .ею (.eu in Cyrillic) on 1 June 2016, upon the request of ICANN, EURid has enforced the basic rule that the second level script must match the top-level script in order to eliminate any possible confusion.
To ensure the consistency of the aforementioned rule across the three extensions, at the time of the launch of the .ευ, EURid:
- Introduced a ‘script adjustment’ phase, to allow registrars and registrants to move previously registered domain name(s) in Greek to the .ευ, so that the top-level domain script matches the second level domain script.
- Cloned all the domain names in Greek registered under .eu and had them registered under .ευ as well. In addition, all linked contacts were copied. Name server information and DNS key information were also copied, as this information depends on the DNS setup of the registrar. These actions were developed during the ‘maintenance window’ of the launch of the .ευ on 14 November 2019.
- Going forward, EURid informed all registrars and registrants of domain names in Greek (that were cloned) that these domains will co-exist under .eu and .ευ until 13 November 2022. Registrars of these domain names were required to pay fees for the domain name under .eu only. On 14 November 2022, the domain names in Greek under .eu were phased out and their equivalent under .ευ remained registered in the EURid database.
Specific cases at the time the .ευ extension went live:
- Domain names in the Greek script that were in quarantine at the launch of .ευ were neither cloned nor activated under the new extension.
- Active domain names in the Greek script belonging to a terminated registrar account, which had a future delete date corresponding to the end of their term, were neither cloned nor activated under the new extension.
- At the launch of .ευ, 'on hold' domain names in the Greek script were cloned.
- At the launch of .ευ, 'quarantine or on hold' domain names in the Greek script were not cloned.
- At the launch of .ευ, 'withdrawn' domain names in the Greek script were not cloned.
- At the launch of .ευ, 'suspended' domain names in the Greek script were not cloned.
- At the launch of .ευ, 'seized' domain names in the Greek script were not cloned.
- At the launch of .ευ, 'numerical' domain names were not cloned.
- As of the launch of .ευ, 'reserved and blocked' domain names in the Greek script followed the same rules described above.
- At the launch of .ευ, 'numerical' domain names marked as reserved, such as 112.eu, were not cloned.
