2023 IDN World Report highlights slow growth and awareness challenges for IDNs

29 June 2023

The recently published IDN World Report 2023 provides insights into the global market for Internationalized Domain Names (IDNs) with a particular focus on country code top-level domains (ccTLDs). The report aims to offer a comprehensive resource for understanding the current trends in IDN registrations, adoption, and technical implementation.

The top three key findings from the report include:

  • 84% of ccTLDs currently support IDN registration, with one additional registry preparing to launch
  • There are approximately 2.9 million IDN registrations under ccTLDs
  • Over the 12 months leading up to January 2023, the median growth of IDN registrations under national ccTLDs was recorded at -0.1%, indicating a decline from the previous year's growth rate of 2.5%

The report shows that while a significant number of ccTLD registries offer IDN registrations, the actual number of IDN registrations remains relatively low compared to the overall domain market. IDN domains currently represent less than 1% of the estimated 360 million domains worldwide. This disparity can most likely attributed to the internet's historical development predominantly in Latin script. Therefore there is a continuous need for increased awareness and adoption of IDNs, particularly in new and emerging economies.
