.ею unites Bulgarian speakers around the world

21 May 2021

The European online identity in Cyrillic, .ею, managed by EURid, is one of the beacons of the Bulgarian language on the web and is celebrating the fifth anniversary of its launch. According to the latest data, there are 1 368 active .ею domain name registrations, representing close to 5% of the internationalised domain names with .eu, .ею and .ευ extensions.

According to a study by the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences, Bulgarian is used by more than 15 million people worldwide.

"On the eve of one of the most important Bulgarian holidays – The Day of Slavonic Alphabet, Bulgarian Enlightenment and Culture, we invite all the speakers and supporters of the Bulgarian language and culture to join us to celebrate the anniversary of the .ею. EURid has been and remains a champion of online multilingualism. The EURid-UNESCO yearly World Report on Internationalised Domain Names (IDNs), such as .ею, show the deep correlation between IDNs and linguistic diversity in the cyberspace. Whenever a .ею domain name resolves into a website, there are high chances that the primary language of the website is Bulgarian”, noted Plamena Argent, Liaison Manager for Bulgaria at EURid, the organisation managing European domain names by appointment of the European Commission.

The latest data available at idnworldreport.eu confirms that the .eu IDNS support a wide array of European languages. Languages are closely aligned with the script of IDN, and this is a consistent theme throughout our study. Latin script .eu IDNs support websites in German (52%), English, Czech, Polish, Swedish, French, and Estonian; 49% of the websites associated with Greek script .ευ IDNs are in Greek language; and 51% of the websites associated with Cyrillic script .ею IDNs are in Bulgarian (51%).

Since its launch in 2007, the total number of registered across the three European online extensions, .eu, .ею and .ευ, has reached 3 715 818, of which 37 265 in Bulgaria, showing growth of almost 10% in the last quarter of 2020.
