Information for Brexit related .eu domain name holders
We would like to draw your attention to the notice to .eu stakeholders (published on eurid.eu) concerning the impact that the United Kingdom’s withdrawal from the European Union has on .eu domain names registered by registrants established or residing in the UK, or by UK citizens residing outside EU/EEA.
As of 1 January 2021, United Kingdom undertakings or organisations established in the United Kingdom but not in the Union, United Kingdom citizens who are not resident of a Union Member State or EEA countries, and United Kingdom residents who are not Union citizens will no longer be eligible to hold a .eu domain name.
Affected domain name holders still have the opportunity to demonstrate continued compliance by updating your contact data before 1 January 2021, 00:00:00 CET by:
- declaring a legally established entity in one of the eligible EU27 or EEA Member States; or
- declaring your residence in one of the eligible EU27 or EEA Member States; or
- declaring your citizenship of one of the EU27 Member States (information on how to updated your data based on citizenship)
If you would like to proceed with updating your contact data, we urge you to contact your registrar (the company through which you registered your domain name). You can find your registrar information by checking your domain name via whois.eurid.eu.
As of 1 January 2021, 00:00:00 CET, if you have not demonstrated your eligibility within the .eu regulatory framework, your domain name(s) will be moved to the so-called “SUSPENDED” status until 31 March 2021. A domain name in the “SUSPENDED” status can no longer support any service (such as website and email), but may still be reinstated if registration data is updated to meet the eligibility criteria. Please contact your registrar for updates.
On 1 April 2021, EURid will once again notify by email all UK registrants and their registrars that their domain names are no longer compliant with the .eu regulatory framework and consequently are moved to the so-called “WITHDRAWN” status. A domain name in the “WITHDRAWN” status cannot support any service. Please contact your registrar for updates.
On 1 January 2022, all the domain names in the “WITHDRAWN” status, formerly assigned to UK registrants, will be REVOKED and subsequently, become AVAILABLE for general registration. Their release will occur in batches for security reasons.
