EuroDIG 2026 brought European Voices Together to Shape the Future of the Internet

On 26 and 27 May 2026, the European Dialogue on Internet Governance (EuroDIG) welcomed policymakers, technical experts, civil society representatives, academics, businesses, and Internet governance stakeholders to the Charlemagne Building in Brussels. Hosted by EURid in partnership with the European Commission, this year's event also marked the 20th anniversary of the .eu domain name.

Under the theme European Voices for the Future of the Internet: Celebrating 20 Years of .eu and the Beginning of a New Internet Governance Era, participants explored the challenges and opportunities facing Europe's digital future. Across two days of discussions, EuroDIG reaffirmed the importance of the multistakeholder model in addressing key Internet governance issues.

Opening the event, EURid General Manager Peter Janssen reflected on two decades of .eu and its role as trusted European digital infrastructure. He highlighted the growing importance of technological sovereignty, resilience, and digital identity in an increasingly interconnected world. "Technology only works when people trust it," he said, emphasising that trust is built through security, reliability, and systems that reflect shared European values.

Discussions throughout the conference focused on topics including digital sovereignty, Internet governance, cybersecurity, innovation, and the resilience of Europe's digital ecosystem. Participants exchanged perspectives on how Europe can continue to foster an open, secure, and trustworthy Internet while reducing dependency risks and strengthening digital resilience.

A key message of the event came from Henna Virkkunen, Executive Vice-President of the European Commission for Tech Sovereignty, Security and Democracy, who reminded participants that: "The future of the Internet will not be shaped by technology alone. It will be shaped by choices, by governance, by cooperation, and by whether we remain faithful to the principles that made the Internet such a transformative force in the first place."

As EuroDIG 2026 concluded, its discussions and outcomes continued to contribute to broader European and global Internet governance processes. Participants can explore the just-in-time reports prepared by the Geneva Internet Platform and DiploFoundation, which provide detailed session summaries, transcripts, analysis, and interactive knowledge visualisations capturing the key discussions from the event.

For EURid, hosting EuroDIG 2026 was both a celebration of twenty years of .eu and an opportunity to facilitate dialogue on the future of the Internet in Europe. The event demonstrated the value of cooperation, shared responsibility, and inclusive governance in addressing the challenges and opportunities of an evolving digital landscape.
